Creative portfolio website design

The design brief. A portfolio-led site for creative professionals — designers, photographers, artists and small studios — where the work has to lead and the interface has to stay quiet.

Workshop photography. The hero shows someone working in a cluttered studio, surrounded by tools and equipment, shot in warm natural light and darkened so the headline reads across it. Choosing the mess of a working studio over a tidy desk is deliberate: creative buyers respond to evidence of making rather than to polish, and a spotless workspace reads as staged.

Mixed-weight headline. The opening line alternates between light and bold within the same sentence, so the emphasis falls on two specific words. It is a small typographic device that gives a single line of copy a rhythm and a focal point without needing a second line or a larger size.

The wave dividers. Small hand-drawn wave marks separate the major sections. They are the only decorative element on the page, used consistently, and they do two jobs: they break long scrolling content into readable chapters, and they introduce a handmade mark into an otherwise geometric layout — appropriate for a site selling creative work.

Three-column capability row. Brand strategy, creative design and clean structure with line icons, set on white with thin separating rules. After a heavy photographic hero, this section is deliberately spare so the page can breathe before the work is shown.

Video thumbnails in the case study block. The projects section pairs written copy with two image cards, one carrying a play control. Offering video alongside stills matters for creative work, where process is often more persuasive than the finished artefact.

Palette. White and near-black with a single bright cyan on buttons. In a portfolio context the interface colour has to stay out of the way, because every project shown will bring its own palette and an opinionated site design will clash with half of them.
