Montage Hotels & Resorts, founded in 2002 by Alan Fuerstman, operates a collection of luxury hotels, resorts and private residences, of which Kapalua Bay is one.
The design problem. Luxury hospitality website design is where restraint matters most and is practised least. The instinct is to add — overlays, animation, superlatives — and every addition makes the property look like it is trying harder, which is precisely the opposite of luxury.
How we designed it. Photography is given the room, the typography is quiet, and the copy is allowed to be short. A property described as offering comfortable elegance and a genuine sense of place has to demonstrate those qualities through the interface rather than assert them in adjectives.
Two audiences, one property. A resort selling both stays and residences is addressing a guest booking a week and a buyer considering a home. Those are utterly different commitments, and the design keeps them on separate paths rather than blurring a purchase enquiry into a booking form.
Pacing is deliberate throughout: generous white space, unhurried scrolling, nothing competing for attention. In this category, calm reads as expensive.
